Kalamazoo County Reserve Officer Foundation

Welcome to the Kalamazoo County Reserve Officer Foundation (KCROF) site. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 46-3391441) to support, train, and equip the dedicated, volunteer Reserve Deputies of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

Mission Statement

To seek out and provide training and educational grants or funds to organizations and activities focused on the continued education and training of Reserve Police Officers and similar groups or volunteers in police service. Education and training of these individuals is critical, not only to the safety of the Reserve Officer, but to protecting the lives and property of Kalamazoo County Citizens in a manner which maintains the highest degree of professional excellence, integrity and courtesy.

To work in partnership with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division and other local agencies and community organizations to further the professional development of volunteers in police service.

Operations Statement

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Division has been in continuous operation since it was founded in 1963 as a civil defense unit. In 1973, the unit was trained and armed to be a backup for, and lend assistance to the regular Sheriff’s Office staff.

In 2014 the Reserve Division’s 73 active Reserve Deputies committed in excess of 9350 hours of non reimbursed community service to the Sheriff’s Office. These included 52 community events totaling approximately 2212 hours of service with events ranging from traffic and security for Western Michigan University football and the Kalamazoo Marathon to child finger printing/safety activities and Kalamazoo County Fair Security.

Reserve Deputies commit significant time and effort in continuous training through out the year to support the Sheriff’s Office in the most professional way possible. Monthly training courses were conducted following the regular business meeting each month with a combined commitment of 891 hours. An additional 503 hours in special training was conducted in weapons training and offsite schools for search and rescue or similar courses.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department Reserve Division is a self funded non-profit. To improve training opportunities the Reserve Division initiated 501 c.3 charitable status with the creation of the Kalamazoo County Reserve Officer Foundation in 2014 to seek funding to support new and ongoing training initiatives improving officer and community safety in an demanding and ever changing community service organization.
